Counting in 5s and 10s

Today in maths the children took it in turns to complete a dot to dot game on the board from Topmarks.co.uk. During the game the children had to continue where the last person left off until they reached 100 and a picture appeared. This is a great game to practice counting in 5s and 10s!

Alien words

During phonics on Tuesday the children had fun creating their own alien names for the alien on the board.

All children came up with their own alien name and wrote them down on whiteboards. They all used their phonics knowledge to come up with these as well as putting sound buttons on to show everyone else how to say their alien name. After this we all sounded each out and blended them together.

Some children even created their alien names based on real words such as ‘Coup’ which came from the word Luke.

Measuring capacity

This week Year 1 have been using their measuring skills and working on different activities based on capacity.

Outside they have been seeing if their estimations are correct and measuring how many cups of water fit into each container.

Inside they have been trying to find out which container can hold the most water. The children started off by estimating which one they thought based on what it looks like, they then took turns in pouring coloured water into each container and then into a jug so we could measure in ml how much water can fit. From there they filled in a table based on their results and used these results to put the containers in order of size from smallest to largest.

Phonics Phonics Phonics!

The summer term is going to be filled with phonics activities, games and practice ready for the Year 1 Phonics Screening that will take place w/c 10.6.19. To kick this off we all practiced our phonics through small group work.

This week we have focused on the /c/ letter changing to an /s/ sound when it is before an e, y or i in a word. The children used foam magnetic letters to make words that relate to this rule such as circus, capacity, cycle and celery. All children worked really hard on this.

We have also been focused on the /au/ sound which is found in words such as Paul, sauce, haunt and fraud.

Starting next week I will be sending phonics homework home so that you can practice the sounds and words containing those sounds with your child. These will also include alien words as well (made up words) so they are practicing their segmenting and blending rather than sight seeing real words.
